Cranston

City in Providence County, central Rhode Island, USA, on Interstates 95 and 295 and the Seekonk River; population (1990) 76,100. It is a suburb to the south of Providence. Industries include textiles, rubber and metal products, wire, machinery, and beer.

A centre for textile production and printing in the early 19th century, Cranston grew rapidly after 1940.

A mental hospital and several correctional institutions are here, as well as Meshanticut State Park and other recreational areas. The city has a sizeable Italian population.
