Craven, Wes

    0.03 sec.

Craven, Wes(ley Earl) (1939– )

US director, producer, and writer who specializes in horror films aimed largely at a teenage audience. He rose to fame with the success of the film A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), which he wrote and directed. He went on to direct Scream (1996) and its two sequels (1997 and 2000). The trilogy was celebrated for its chilling yet ironic tone, poking fun at low-budget horror films, while still achieving mainstream box-office success.

He also directed The People Under the Stairs (1992), and produced Wishmaster (1997) and Dracula 2000 (2000). His film Music of the Heart (1999) marked a departure from the horror genre; starring Meryl Streep, it was about the true-life story of violin teacher Roberta Guaspari.

Craven was born in Cleveland, Ohio. His first novel, Fountain Society, was published in 1999.
