Crawford, (John Wallace) ‘Captain Jack’ (1847–1917)

Irish-born US scout and author who came to the USA in 1854. He served with the Union forces in the US Civil War and as a scout in campaigns against the Sioux and Apache Indians. He wrote books and plays, including The Poet Scout (1879).

He was born in County Donegal, Ireland. He initially worked as a coalminer, but later established a ranch in New Mexico.
