Crawford, Michael

Crawford, Michael (1942– )

English actor and singer. He played the title role in Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical The Phantom of the Opera, which opened in London in 1986 and New York in 1988.

His early television, film, and stage appearances were mainly in comedy, including the TV series Not so Much a Programme, More a Way of Life (1964) and Some Mothers Do 'ave 'em (1973–78), the film A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966), and the play No Sex, Please – We're British (1971). His musical theatre performances included Barnum (1981), in which he played the part of the circus impresario P T Barnum.

He toured the USA, UK, and Australia 1990–91 in The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, a revue.
