Crawford (Seeger), Ruth (Porter) (1901-1953)

US composer. She compiled many folk-song anthologies, including American Folk Songs for Children (1948), and wrote hundreds of her own piano accompaniments. Her own compositions are regarded as anticipating certain later developments in music.

She studied at the Chicago Conservatory and with Charles Seeger, whom she later married.

Works

suite for piano and woodwind quintet (1927), nine piano preludes (1924-28), string quartet (1931), Risselty, Rosselty for small orchestra (1941), 2 Ricercari for voice and piano (1932).
