Crawford

City in Dawes County, northwestern Nebraska, USA, on the White River, 38 km/24 mi southwest of Chadron, 38 km/24 mi south of the South Dakota border, and 53 km/33 mi east of the Wyoming state line; population (2000) 1,100. It is a trading centre for an irrigated ranching and farming area.

Fort Robinson (established 1874), 6 km/4 mi west of Crawford, was important in the Indian wars, and was the site of the killing (1877) of Crazy Horse, who had been imprisoned there. Established in 1885, Crawford was once a rowdy frontier town. Nearby are Toadstool Park (in the Badlands), site of erosion-created formations, and Warbonnet Battlefield, scene of an 1876 skirmish between Cheyenne and cavalry accompanied by Buffalo Bill Cody.
