Crawley

Town in West Sussex, England, northeast of Horsham, 45 km/28 mi south of London; population (2001) 100,550. It was chartered by King John in 1202 and developed as a new town from 1947. Industries include light engineering, electronics, printing, and the manufacture of plastics, pharmaceuticals, and furniture. London's Gatwick Airport is to the north.

The new town was planned as a self-contained unit built around the old village of Crawley, with ten neighbourhoods, each designed with shops, schools, and other amenities. The growth of Gatwick Airport to the north caused the expansion of the town to be faster than originally anticipated.
