Creangǎ, Ion (1837–1889)

Romanian writer. A friend of Mihai Eminescu, he frequented the literary circle known as Junimea (‘youth’), where he presented his short stories based on folklore. His most successful work, the autobiographical ‘Amintiri din copilǎrie/Memories of My Childhood’, concerns his native Moldavian village and its inhabitants. His narratives are marked by irony and humour.

Creangǎ came from a peasant background. He was ordained a priest, but was unfrocked in 1872 for unseemly conduct.
