creationism |
Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Encyclopedia, Wikipedia | 0.06 sec. |
creationismTheory concerned with the origins of matter and life, claiming, as does the Bible in Genesis, that the world and humanity were created by a supernatural Creator, not more than 6,000 years ago. It was developed in response to Darwin's theory of evolution; it is not recognized by most scientists as having a factual basis. After a trial 1981-82, a US judge ruled as unconstitutional an attempt in Arkansas schools to enforce equal treatment of creationism and evolutionary theory. From 1996 in Alabama, all biology textbooks had to contain a statement that evolution is a controversial theory and not a proven fact. In 1999 the Kansas Board of Education added creationism to the school science curriculum, and removed evolution. However, evolution was restored to the curriculum in 2001. |

Creationists believe the world was made by God in six days, as described in the biblical book of Gensis. After all, anti-evolutionists have been around since the publication of The Origin of Species, and the original generation of creationists spawned innumerable progeny that have adapted to a variety of environments. These are animals who provide examples of what creationists have termed the 'irreducible complexity' of life challenging the concept of classic evolutionary development. |
