Crerar, Henry Duncan Graham (1888–1965)

Canadian general. Appointed Chief of the Canadian General Staff 1940, he was sent to Britain to organize the training of Canadian troops as they arrived. He resigned 1941 and took a drop in rank to command the 1st Canadian Corps which he led in the invasion of Sicily 1944. He commanded 1st Canadian Army in the D-Day invasion of France. His force was later involved in clearing the Schelde Estuary and 1945 broke the Siegfried Line and entered Germany.

Crerar was born in Hamilton, Ontario, and educated at the Royal Military College, Kingston. He served in France in World War I.
