US geographer. He spent a total of ten years in Asia (much of it in China) from which came China's Geographic Foundations (1934), Asia's Lands and Peoples (1944), Land of the 500 Million: A Geography of China (1955), and many other books and articles.

He was born in Tiffin, Ohio.
