Crested Butte

Crested Butte

Town in Gunnison County, west-central Colorado, USA, on the Slate River, 40 km/25 mi north-northwest of Gunnison and 206 km/128 mi west-southwest of Denver, in the Elk Mountains; population (1990) 878. An 1880s gold and coal mining centre, it is now a resort, particularly popular with mountain bikers.

Mount Crested Butte (town, population (1990) 264), just to the north, is a ski resort developed in the 1980s.
