Creston, Paul

Creston, Paul (1906–1985)

US composer and teacher. His music uses jazzy rhythms and a rich orchestral palette.

He studied piano and organ, but was self-taught in harmony, theory, and composition. He also did research in music therapy, aesthetics, acoustics, and the history of music. In 1938 he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship.

Works

6 symphonies (1941–82), 15 concertos, including one for two violins, much orchestral music; choral works, many based on texts by Whitman; chamber music; songs.
