Creuse

River in central France. It rises near Aubusson, flows 255 km/158 mi from the Plateau des Millevaches northwest through a deep valley, and joins the River Vienne 19 km/12 mi north of Châtellerault. It traverses Creuse département, to which it gives its name.

Creuse

Département in the Limousin region of France; area 5,559 sq km/2,146 sq mi; population (1999 est) 124,500. The River Creuse flows through the region, which is mountainous and has thin, unproductive soil. In the southern hills there is good pasture land. Stock-rearing is important, but potatoes and some cereals are also produced. Carpets and textiles are manufactured. The principal towns are Guéret (administrative centre) and Aubusson.

Creuse is formed of part of the former province of Marche and small parts of Poitou, Bourbonnais, Limousin, and Berry.
