Crieff

Town and former burgh in Perth and Kinross unitary authority, Scotland, on the River Earn, 30 km/19 mi west of Perth; population (2001) 6,600. Originally a centre for the manufacture of woollen, cotton, and linen goods, it evolved into a spa and holiday resort, also providing service industries for the surrounding agricultural area.

Drummond Castle, standing 7 km/4 mi to the southwest of Crieff, has a keep dating to 1490 and a sunken Italian garden.

Until 1770 a great cattle fair was held at Crieff, at which its ‘kind gallows’ punished the highland cattle rustlers.
