Criminal Investigation Department

Detective branch of the London Metropolitan Police, established in 1878, comprising in 1998 a force of 3,834 (3,458 men and 376 women) recruited entirely from the uniformed police and controlled by an assistant commissioner. Such branches are now also found in the regional police forces.
