Critias

Critias (c. 460–403 BC)

Athenian politician and orator. He was one of the Thirty Tyrants installed as rulers of Athens by the Spartans at the end of the Peloponnesian War 404 BC. He was killed while at war against the Athenian general Thrasybulus (died 388 BC).

A pupil of Socrates, he was introduced by Plato in one of his dialogues ‘Critias’.

The fragment of the Critias has given birth to a world-famous fiction, second only in importance to the tale of Troy and the legend of Arthur; and is said as a fact to have inspired some of the early navigators of the sixteenth century.
