Cromarty

Coastal town and former burgh in Highland unitary authority, Scotland, at the tip of the Black Isle peninsula, 25 km/16 mi northeast of Inverness; population (2002) 720. Originally a prosperous trading centre with a thriving herring industry, it now benefits from the development of the oil industry in the area. The servicing and maintenance of North Sea oil rigs takes place in Cromarty Firth, especially at Nigg and Invergorden.

Cromarty was the birthplace of Hugh Miller, the 19th-century writer and geologist; his memorial statue was erected in the town in 1859.
