Cromer

Seaside resort on the northeast coast of Norfolk, England, 37 km/23 mi north of Norwich; population (2001) 3,900. Apart from tourism, fishing (especially for crabs) is the main activity.

Cromer became popular as a holiday destination because of its favourable location, sheltered on the land side by hills and woods. There are golf links to the west of the town. The sea has greatly encroached on parts of the coast; the cliffs are protected by sea walls at Cromer, but subject to rapid erosion between Cromer and Overstrand. There is a lifeboat station and a lighthouse, whose light is visible for 37 km/23 mi.
