Cronyn, Hume (1911-2003)

Canadian stage and film actor. He came to New York in 1934 and soon gained a reputation as a character actor, first on the stage and, starting in 1943, in many movies. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his supporting role in The Seventh Cross (1944), but was best known for his performance in Cocoon (1985).

He was born in London, Ontario. While studying law at McGill University, he enjoyed initial success as an actor in Montréal. Over the years he often teamed up with his wife, Jessica Tandy whom he married in 1942. He wrote film and stage adaptations and directed for the theatre.
