Crosby, Sidney Patrick (1987– )| Canadian ice hockey player. He was the number one pick in the 2005 National Hockey League (NHL) draft, chosen by the Pittsburgh Penguins, and scored 102 points in his first season. He became the youngest ever player, and first teenager, to win the scoring title when he finished the 2006–07 season with 120 points. That same year, he was just the seventh person ever to win the Hart Trophy (the league's most valuable player award), the Art Ross Trophy (top points scorer in the league) and the Lester B Pearson award (most outstanding player, as voted by fellow players) in the same season. In May 2007, he was named Pittsburgh's captain, making him the youngest captain in NHL history. |
| He played for Canada in the 2004 World Junior Championships, winning a silver medal, and won gold at the same event the following year. In 2006, he became the youngest player ever to win a scoring title at the World Championships, where Canada finished in fourth place. Crosby scored eight goals and eight assists in nine games. In 2008, he led Pittsburgh to the Stanley Cup Finals, but they lost 4–2 to the Detroit Red Wings. He wears the number 87 on his jersey because his birthday is 7 August 1987 (8/7/87). His father Troy was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 1984, but never played at the NHL level. |
