cross rhythms

In music, either the simultaneous presentation of opposing rhythmic patterns within the same metre (for example one part playing two notes per beat while another part plays three notes per beat, ‘2 against 3’), or the superimposition of at least two different and unrelated metres (for example 3/4 in one part and 4/4 in another).
