crowding out

In economics, a situation in which an increase in government expenditure results in a fall in private-sector investment, either because it causes inflation or a rise in interest rates (as a result of increased government borrowing) or because it reduces the efficiency of production as a result of government intervention. Crowding out has been used as a justification of supply-side economics such as the privatization of state-owned industries and services.
