Crown colonyAny British colony that is under the direct legislative control of the Crown and does not possess its own system of representative government. Crown colonies are administered by a crown-appointed governor or by elected or nominated legislative and executive councils with an official majority. By 1624, fed up with mismanagement and infighting that produced bankruptcy for the Virginia Company rather than a profitable economic enterprise, King James I revoked the charter he had granted the company and declared Virginia a crown colony answerable to him. The former British Crown Colony is still an economic hub and a free-trade zone, several years after reverting to Chinese rule in 1997. Differentiation between natives and others happened largely for practical reasons: as in 1898-99, when it was decided that the New Territory, being so different in all respects, could not be administered in the same way as the Crown Colony proper. |
