Crown Estate

Title (from 1956) of land in UK owned by the monarch. The income from it was handed to Parliament by George III in 1760 in exchange for an annual payment (the civil list).

The Crown Estate is one of the largest landed estates in the UK, and owns all Mines Royal (mines of gold and silver) and valuable sites in central London, which, along with 268,400 acres in England and Scotland, are valued in excess of £1.2 billion.

The accounts of the Crown Estate Commissioners are published in their annual report. In 1992–93 the gross income from the Crown Estate totalled £119,924,000, and the sum paid to the Exchequer as surplus revenue was £70,500,000.
