Crown Point

City in northwestern Indiana, USA, 19 km/12 mi south of Hammond and Lake Michigan; seat of Lake County; population (2000) 19,800. Its industries process grain and film, and manufacture farm implements, truck parts, furniture, sports equipment, and grinders. Crown Point is also a residential suburb.

Crown Point

Town in Essex County, northeastern New York, in the Adirondack Mountains, on Lake Champlain, just west of the Vermont border, 80 km/50 mi south of Plattsburgh; population (1990) 2,000. The town is primarily a resort.

Within the township is the Crown Point Peninsula, first settled (1714) as a British trading post. Located on the route from New York to Canada, it was the site of the French Fort St Frederic (1731). During the French and Indian War, this was destroyed by the British under Jeffrey Amherst (1759). The British Fort Crown Point was in turn captured by the Green Mountain Boys (1775), changed hands twice, and was abandoned to the British during the Saratoga campaign (1777). Crown Point Reservation, at the tip of the peninsula, contains ruins of the forts.
