Crickhowell

Town in Powys, central Wales, 9 km/6 mi northwest of Abergavenny, situated in the Black Mountains in the Usk valley; population (2001) 2,800. Overlooked to the south by the limestone escarpment of the south Wales coalfield, Crickhowell is a centre for walking, climbing, caving, and hang-gliding. About 3 km/1.8 mi northeast of the town is a hill called Crug-Hywel, from which the town's name is derived. Crickhowell has a Norman castle and an ancient bridge.

The Llangattwg nature reserve (Craig yr Cilan) is situated nearby. This contains the entrance to two major cave systems (Osof Agen Allwedd and Osof Darin Cilan) which are of great interest to British and European caving enthusiasts. The reserve contains some rare alpine plants and lesser whitebeam.
