Accademia della Crusca

Italian academy founded in Florence in 1582 by the writer Antonio Francesco Grazzini (1503-1584). It aimed at purifying and cultivating Italian language and literature, and its Vocabolario degli Accademici della Crusca (first edition 1612) is still a model for works of the kind. The Académie Française (see Academy, French) was modelled on this one.
