Accademia della Crusca

Italian academy founded in Florence in 1582 by the writer Antonio Francesco Grazzini (1503–1584). It aimed at purifying and cultivating Italian language and literature, and its Vocabolario degli Accademici della Crusca (first edition 1612) is still a model for works of the kind. The Académie Française (see Academy, French) was modelled on this one.
