Cruveilhier, Jean (1791-1874)

French pathologist. He was the first to describe multiple sclerosis. A new chair of pathological anatomy was created for him at Paris University in 1836, a post which he held for 30 years.

He published Anatomie pathologique du corps humain/A Pathological Anatomy of the Human Body (1829-42), a fine medical atlas with coloured plates.

Cruveilhier was born in Limoges. He studied medicine at Paris, graduating in 1816. He was professor of pathology at Montpellier 1823-25 and Paris 1825-36.
