hellbender

Voracious four-legged, tailed salamander Cryptobranchus alleghaniensis, in the amphibian order Urodela. It is found in some of the rivers of North America, and is slate-coloured and about 60 cm/24 in long; the body is short and thick, and the head large, flat, and broad, with wide, fleshy lips. The neck has a single gill cleft on either side.
