Cuiabá

Capital of Mato Grosso state, west-central Brazil, 1,000 km/6,214 mi from Brasilia, on the River Cuiabá, a tributary of the Paraguay; population (1991) 389,000. It lies on the Pan-American Highway (BR-230) from Brasilia across to the Peruvian border. Situated in a cattle-raising region, Cuiabá is a distribution centre for cattle, hides, and dried meat; cereal crops are also important in the region. Rubber and palmnut gathering are important sustainable industries that provide the region with export products. Gold and diamonds are mined nearby. The city grew with the discovery of gold in 1719 and was the capital of the entire Mato Grosso region until Mato Grosso was divided in the 1970s.

Future economic prosperity is assured with large lead ore deposits being worked close to Cuiabá and the discovery of oil at Várzea Grande - Cuiabá's sister city located on the opposite bank of the River Cuiabá.
