Culross

Town and former burgh in Fife unitary authority, Scotland, on the north side of the Firth of Forth, 32 km/20 mi southwest of Glenrothes; population (2001, Culross, Valleyfield, and Torryburn) 2,900. It was originally an industrial centre with salt pans, baking griddle foundries, and deep submarine coalmines, now exhausted. Much of the town's 16th and 17th-century domestic architecture remains intact, and the ruins of a Cistercian abbey founded in the 13th century stand on its western outskirts.
