Portland is the county seat. The state's most heavily and densely populated county, it has both inland and coastal resorts; manufacturing and commerce in the Portland area; and market-garden farming and dairying in rural sections. Industries include food canning, fishing, publishing, printing, and the manufacture of paper, footwear, hardware, textiles, and wood and clay products. |

The county is situated on the northern edge of the Atlantic Coastal Plain, and bisected by the Cape Fear River. Its seat is Fayetteville, where its industry is concentrated. Its agricultural products include tobacco, soybeans, corn, grain, hogs, and poultry. Lumbering is also important. The eastern section of Fort Bragg, including Pope Air Force Base, lies in the northwest. |
Cumberland County| County in southern Pennsylvania, USA; area 1,417 sq km/547 sq mi; population (1990) 195,300. The county is bounded to the north by Blue Mountain. Its seat is Carlisle. The Cumberland Valley was a major pioneer route to the west; today the Pennsylvania Turnpike and Interstate 81 pass through it. The county is largely agricultural, with suburbs of Harrisburg along the Susquehanna River, in the east. |
