Cumberland Gap| Pass cut by the Cumberland River through the Cumberland Mountains range of the Appalachian Mountains, between southwest Virginia and southeast Kentucky, eastern USA, at an altitude of 518 m/1,700 ft. The area is now a national historical park. |
| This route was followed by the pioneer Daniel Boone, who drove his Wilderness Trail through the mountains into Kentucky, paving the way for the early settlers migrating to the west. Its position gave it strategic importance during the time of the American Civil War and it was held alternately by the Confederates and the Union forces. |
