Cummington

Town in Hampshire County, west-central Massachusetts, USA, on the Westfield River, 29 km/18 mi east of Pittsfield; population (1998 est) 785. The town is agricultural, with some resort trade, and attracts exurban migrants. The area is noted for its arts and crafts.

A hilly rural area, the Hillside Agricultural Society holds an annual fair. Cummington is the birthplace (1794) of poet and editor William Cullen Bryant, some of whose works draw on local scenery. His former home is on the national register of historic places.
