Cumnor

Village in Oxfordshire, England, 6 km/3.7 mi southwest of Oxford; population (2001) 5,500. Cumnor was the site of Cumnor Hall, the house where Amy Robsart – wife of the Elizabethan courtier Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester – met her death in suspicious circumstances in 1560.

Cumnor Hall was described by the Scottish writer Walter Scott in his 1821 novel Kenilworth, but has since been destroyed. Part of the village church dates from the 13th century and contains a chained Bible and a statue of Queen Elizabeth I, said to have been erected at the hall by Leicester.
