Cunene

River rising near Huambo (formerly Nova Lisboa) in west-central Angola. It flows south to the frontier with Namibia, then west to the Atlantic Ocean; length 945 km/587 mi. The river forms the border between Angola and Namibia for a distance of 250 km/150 mi.

Course

The river rises on the tableland of Benguela and flows west in a series of rapids to the sea, where its mouth is blocked by sandbanks. It drains an area of 105,000 sq km/40,540 sq mi. Power is transmitted to Namibia from the Matala Dam, 200 km/120 mi east of Sada Bandeira.
