Cuneo

Capital of Cuneo province in Piedmont region, northern Italy, 75 km/47 mi southwest of Turin; population (1991) 55,800. It is situated at the foot of the Maritime Alps, on a wedge-shaped terrace (Italian cuneo, ‘wedge’) above the confluence of the rivers Stura di Demonte and Gesso. The city's economy is based on agricultural produce (especially wine), engineering, and paper. It has a livestock market, and is an important communications centre.

The politician Giuseppe Barideraux (1772-1843), the actor Giovanni Toselli (1819-1886), and the mathematician Giuseppe Peano (1858-1932) were born here.
