Cunningham, Harry

Cunningham, Harry (Blair) (1907–1992)

US retail executive. He is credited with early recognition and development of the potential of discount retailing.

He was born in Home Camp, Pennsylvania. After 30 years with the S S Kresge discount company, he became president and CEO 1959–72. In 1962 he opened the first Kmart discount store; by 1990 the corporation, renamed Kmart Corporation in 1977, was the country's second-largest retailer.
