Curran, John Philpot

Curran, John Philpot (1750–1817)

Irish judge and orator. He was a staunch supporter of the Irish politician Henry Grattan and defended many Irish rebels, notably after the 1798 rising.

He became a barrister in 1775 and was created King's Counsel in 1782. The following year he entered the Irish Parliament as member for Kilbeggan. From 1806 to 1814 he served the Whig government as master of the rolls in Ireland.
