The type of money in use in a country; for example, the US dollar, the Australian dollar, the UK pound sterling, and the Japanese yen.

In 2002, 12 European countries had their currencies replaced by the single currency of the European Union (EU), the euro. By January 2008 there were 15 countries in the eurozone.
