Curtis, Tony

Curtis, Tony (1925– )

US film actor. He was popular in the 1950s and 1960s, appearing in such films as Trapeze (1956), Sweet Smell of Success (1957), in which he gave one of his best performances as a nervously energetic press agent, The Vikings (1958), Some Like It Hot (1959), in which he starred with Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe, Spartacus (1960), The Boston Strangler (1968), and The Last Tycoon (1976).

Curtis also produced some films after 1973, appeared in a few films during the 1980s, but his most successful roles were in a number of television productions. He took a recurring role in the series Vegas (1978–81) and starred in the telefeature Mafia Princess (1986). Curtis gave memorable performances in the television movie The Scarlett O'Hara War (1980, as US producer David O Selznick), and in Nicolas Roeg's Insignificance (1985).

He was married to actor Janet Leigh; their daughter is actor Jamie Lee Curtis. His autobiography, Tony Curtis: The Autobiography, was published in 1993.
