Curtiz, Michael

Curtiz, Michael (1888–1962)

Hungarian-born film director. He was a stage actor from 1906, then became a film actor and director in 1912. Born in Budapest, he worked in Austria, Germany, and France before moving to the USA in 1926. Working in every film genre, he made some 125 Hollywood films, winning an Academy Award for Casablanca (1942).

He made several films with actor Errol Flynn, including Captain Blood (1935), The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), and Dodge City (1939). Other films include Angels with Dirty Faces (1938), Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942), Mildred Pierce (1945), Life with Father (1947), The Unsuspected (1947), and White Christmas (1954), among many others.
