Custer County

Custer County

County in southwestern South Dakota, USA; area 4,038 sq km/1,559 sq mi; population (1990) 6,200. The county is bounded by the Wyoming border to the west. It is named after General George A Custer, who came here in 1874; its seat is Custer. Including within its boundaries Custer State Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, and Wind Cave National Park, it has a thriving tourist industry. The county produces dairy products, livestock, poultry, grain, and timber. There are mines in the area around Custer.

The county was the centre of the South Dakota gold rush of the mid 1870s.
