Cutts, John, Baron Cutts of Gowran (1661-1707)

English soldier. He fought with William of Orange in Ireland at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, distinguished himself at the siege of Namur, in the Spanish Netherlands, in 1695, and was third in command at the Battle of Blenheim in 1704.

He began service in the Duke of Monmouth's suite and later served under Charles, Duke of Lorraine, against the Turks in Hungary, and in 1686 played a prominent part in the capture of Buda. Fighting against the French in the War of the Grand Alliance and of the Spanish Succession, he was present at the battles of Steenkerque in 1692 and Brest in 1694, and at the capture of Fort St Michael in 1702. He sat in Parliament 1689-91 and 1702-07.
