Cuu Long

Province in the Mekong delta of southern Vietnam; area 3,854 sq km/1,488 sq mi; population (1979 est) 1,504,200. It is bounded by rivers on three sides: the Song Tien Gang to the north, the Song Co Chien to the northeast and the Song Hau Giang to the southwest. The South China Sea forms the boundary to the southeast. The capital is Vinh Long. Major industries include rice cultivation in the alluvium of the delta, fishing and fish farming in the coastal areas, coconut farming, and sawmilling. Rice milling is important at Vung Liem. Cuu Long also has significant undeveloped reserves of oil and natural gas.

Cuu Long was formed in 1976 from the former provinces of Vinh Long and Vinh Binh.

The lowland of the Mekong delta suffers from annual flooding at the time of the summer monsoon and the flood of 2000 covered a particularly extensive area to the west of Ho Chi Minh City, with massive disruption of agriculture and transport.
