Cuyahoga

River in Ohio, approximately 180 km/112 mi in length, which rises near Lake Erie, flowing south, then west, past Akron, before turning north to enter Lake Erie at Cleveland, in Cuyahoga County, Ohio.

The industrialization of the region was prompted by the building, between 1825 and 1832, of the Ohio and the Pennsylvania and Ohio canals from the Cuyahoga River to Lake Erie. These were originally built to improve navigation of the area.

In 1964 the river had become so polluted that it caught fire.
