Cuyahoga County

County in northern Ohio, USA; area 1,189 sq km/459 sq mi; population (1990) 1,412,100. The county is bounded by Lake Erie to the north, and is drained by the Cuyahoga River, which forms its extreme southeastern border, and the Rocky River. Its seat is Cleveland, which with its many suburbs makes up the majority of the county's area. Manufacturing is centred in and around Cleveland. Farming includes dairy, vegetables, and poultry. The exploitation of gravel, salt, and sand deposits forms an important part of the county's economy. Cuyahoga County is famous for its parks; a total of nine, comprising 3,794 ha/9,369 ac.

In 2002, Cleveland and surrounding Cuyahoga County (2000 population 1,393,978 of whom 1,302,982 were [greater than or equal to] 5 years of age) reported 221 laboratory-confirmed cases of WNV illness, including 155 WNND cases (111 cases/million population) with 11 deaths from July 30 to October 3.
Cuyahoga County common pleas judge Stuart Friedman on March 23 reduced the felony conviction of Frederick Burk, who was prosecuted on charges of slapping and shoving his girlfriend, to a misdemeanor.
Cleveland, with a 5 percent recycling rate in 2002, finished last in a review of recycling programs in Cuyahoga County, according to the Plain Dealer.
