Encoding a message so that it can only be read by the intended recipient. The mathematical calculation of encryption formulae is called cryptography.

In theory, only the person or machine doing the scrambling and the recipient of the cyphertext know how to decrypt or unscramble the data since it will have been encrypted using an agreed-upon set of keys.
A key is a mathematical value that determines how a plain text message is encrypted to produce a cyphertext, and its possession is required to decrypt the cyphertext and recover the original message.
In theory, only the person or machine doing the scrambling and the recipient of the cyphertext know how to decrypt or unscramble the data since it will have been encrypted using an agreed-upon set of keys.
